Tess September 30th, 2005

Diagnosing an adult with ADHD is not easy. Many times, when a child is diagnosed with the disorder, a parent will recognize that he or she has many of the same symptoms the child has and, for the first time, will begin to understand some of the traits that have given him or her trouble for years—distractibility, impulsivity, restlessness.

Your ADHD Child and School

Tess September 27th, 2005

You are your child’s best advocate. To be a good advocate for your child, learn as much as you can about ADHD and how it affects your child at home, in school, and in social situations.

If your child has shown symptoms of ADHD from an early age and has been evaluated, diagnosed, and treated with either behavior modification or medication or a combination of both, when your child enters the school system, let his or her teachers know. They will be better prepared to help the child come into this new world away from home.

Are We Overdiagnosing ADHD In Our Kids?

Tess September 21st, 2005

by Rachel Klein, Ph.D.

The question is not trivial. Parents, educational administrators, teachers and physicians are called upon to make important decisions that profoundly affect the educational and emotional of more than a million school children.

Although there is a substantial body of research on the diagnosis and treatment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), the media are quick to produce headlines, soundbites and interpretations of research findings designed to attract attention rather than to accurately transmit scientific facts. Some examples of media coverage:

What Do I Do About My Child’s Exam Anxiety?

Tess September 20th, 2005

Question

My daughter does well all during the term in her studies but unfortunately when it comes to exam times, her grades do not support this. What I noticed with her is that when we explain something to her she picks it up quickly and will remember for a day or two but just as quickly she forgets. Her teacher also pointed out to us that when it is exam time she is very anxious and tense. We have never given her cause for anxiety and always encourages her though at times we are disappointed but will not let her know. Is there something that you can recommend that will help her retain stuff in Memory as well as eliminate
the nervous anxiety she has when exam times comes? Thank you.

Improving Self-Esteem. Towards A Stronger You!

Tess September 19th, 2005

Self-esteem is a term that we hear frequently these days and we associate it loosely with having confidence in ourselves, being able to be assertive, and generally having the ability to manage life and all that it brings with it.

Many people who consult me have problems with self-esteem and low self-esteem often underlies problems in other areas such as business, relationships, and general achievement.

Treating ADHD often requires a combination of approaches. One aspect involves diet.

As with weight loss programs, adhering to a diet that will help to lessen the symptoms of ADHD will require commitment and vigilance, especially in the case of children!

However, by following these simple guidelines below in combination with a natural treatment program, you should notice an improvement in your or your child’s symptoms:

1. Avoid foods and drinks high in sugar - e.g. candies - during school days and limit over weekends.
