There are generally two different labels of insomnia, primary and secondary. Secondary insomnia is insomnia that there is a medical reason for. This type of insomnia should be treated by a physician. This is where one condition is worsened by another disorder.
One common cause of secondary insomnia is sleep apnea. This is a disorder that is caused by a difficulty in breathing while sleeping. Symptoms include loud snoring, frequent long pauses between breaths that are followed by a gasping or choking to get air. All of these symptoms are persistently present.

Did you know that not getting enough sleep is associated with several different chronic diseases and conditions? Diseases and conditions such as diabetes, obesity, depression and also cardiovascular diseases. Your inability to fall asleep or stay asleep may be having an important impact on your health.
There is a direct connection between how you feel and how you perform each day to how much sleep you received the night before. Not being able to get enough sleep due to sleep disorders can lead to and cause the onset of many diseases.

What is insomnia and is it a sleeping disorder? To answer these questions you need to know what a sleeping disorder is and what does it mean when someone has insomnia.
When someone is said to have insomnia they have a condition in which they are having difficulty either falling asleep or staying asleep. Individuals with insomnia may fall asleep quickly, but then wake up too soon and have trouble getting back to sleep. Others with insomnia can’t fall asleep. Either way, they have poor-quality sleep that leaves them feeling unrefreshed, and unable to function properly because they do not feel alert during the day.

Insomnia is often mistaken for a disease. It is actually a symptom of some other ailment. The natural fall out of this fact is that treating the condition that is implicitly causing insomnia will automatically cure Sleeplessness. For example by treating depression you are most likely to be cured of the accompanying sleep problems too.

Sleep disorders can affect the amount of sleep, the quality of sleep and the timing of sleep. There are more than seventy types of sleep disorders that can cause various kinds of conditions. Some of these are:
* Transient Insomnia - a temporary condition that does not last for more than a week. Sometimes, it occurs for a couple of days and then fades away on its own.
* Acute Insomnia - a condition wherein the afflicted cannot sleep well for a long period. This could last from a couple of weeks to six months.
* Chronic Insomnia - a serious sleep disorder that persists every night.

Grabbing a sleeping pill and gulping it down seems to be the easiest way to get sleep for those who suffer from Insomnia. Admittedly it is the quickest way for insomniacs to fall asleep. But it is definitely not the best way to get sleep. This habit brings addiction, side effects and dependency along and these can be extremely difficult to deal with later.

Humans need at least 7-8 hours of sound sleep every 24 hours, to remain mentally alert and physically active during work hours. Older people may sleep less at night and have small naps during the day to fulfill the body’s requirement of sleep. But getting a restful sleep is not something that everyone enjoys. There are many people who suffer from Insomnia either due to a physical disturbance or a mental turmoil.

Sleep disorders like insomnia can play havoc with the daily circadian of an individual’s life. Each and every individual requires a certain amount of sleep to be able to perform at optimum level. The hours of sleep that are necessary depend on age and other lifestyle factors. A person who has not had a good night’s sleep is likely to be listless throughout the day. Sleeplessness lowers the sense of wellbeing that is necessary for efficient working.

Adolescent insomnia is a recent phenomenon. Even though we think of adolescence as the most enjoyable and best period of life, things have changed considerably over the past few years. Adolescence has never been an easy time but the present environment of increased peer pressure and anxiety about success has made this stage of life a time of extreme turmoil for teen and parents alike. These two Stress factors are enough to cause Depression and consequently insomnia in most cases.
