Making hooded towels for kids

A hooded bath towel is very convenient for wrapping babies and toddlers after a bath. For that matter even adults can make good use of it. There are times when kids do not what to dress up for a while after a bath. A hooded towel will cover them from head to toe and keep them warm, ensuring that there is no significant change in temperature as soon as the baby is taken out of the bath.

Hooded towels are available in online stores and otherwise also. You can make your own hooded towel if you are not new to sewing. You can even hand stitch it if you do not own a sewing machine.

You will need a regular or a toddler bath towel, a hand towel and some ribbon. One hand towel will make two hoods. You can even use a towel fabric that is available in yardage for the purpose. This will give you freedom to cut the fabric according to the size you require.

* Cut the hand towel into two or cut out a piece from the yardage.
* Fold it in half with the wrong side on the outside and sew the top edges together.
* Flip the seam you sewed and the hand towel will look like a triangle over a rectangle. This is the hood.
* Place the hood with the towel and sew with the seam of the towel showing on the outside. This will ensure that the rough seam does not rub against the neck of the baby/toddler.
* Sew a ribbon over the rough seam to cover it in a way that it does not show.
* Make two lengths of ribbon according to the length of the towel and stitch on both sides of the towel.
* Make sure that you sew both edges of the ribbon. To prevent fraying of the ribbon, fold ends of ribbon at both ends.

The choice of towel is an important factor, more so if you are making a hooded towel for kids. When you select towels for your kids pay more attention to the health aspect.

* Towels made from synthetic fibers are less absorbent. They also loose shape very easily.
* Cotton has the best absorption properties and helps the body to dry quickly.
* The towel should feel soft. Towels mostly come in two types - terry towels and velour. The major difference is in the manufacturing style. Terry towels are made by a process that loops the yarn on both sides of the fabric. In velour towels these loops are cropped to give a smoother texture.
* Towels should be densely stitched, double folded at ends and have a solid border. When folded they should be perfectly square at the corners.

Pure organic cotton towels are best suited for kids. Organic means that they are not blended with harmful synthetic fibers nor use any chemicals during the manufacturing processes. Nothing could be more important for parents than the health of their children. Although a bit expensive than other qualities, organic cotton towels are actually a good long term investment.
