How To Boost Your Metabolism

Tess November 21st, 2008

We can help boost our metabolism by the food that we eat. Certain foods help the metabolism such as the B vitamin, Biotin. Biotin helps the body in not only metabolizing amino acids but in producing energy. You can get biotin in several different foods including barley, egg yolk and in milk products. You can also take in biotin in pill form.

If you have a slow metabolism you can eat foods rich in Omega-3 to help rev up your metabolism. Foods that contain Omega-3 are flax seed oil, meat from grass-fed animals, salmon, tuna fish, and walnuts.

Eating fiber is another way to boost your metabolism. Fiber releases slower than sugar does and therefore sustains energy over a longer period of time.

When eating, you want to be sure to not go below 1200 calories per day because if you go below that your body will think that you are starving and it will slow down the metabolism as a survival tactic.

It is important to eat breakfast because; while we sleep our bodies do not require that much energy, so the metabolism slows down. In order to rev it back up you have to eat something! If you do not eat breakfast your metabolism will not rev back up until you eat for the first time each day.

To keep your metabolism working longer and steadier, eat six smaller meals instead of 3 big ones. You should concentrate on eating lean protein, fruits and vegetables. Your body works harder breaking down proteins than it does carbohydrates and fats, so eating nuts yogurt, low-fat cheese and lean meats such as chicken and fish helps your metabolism.

Calcium can also speed up your metabolism so don’t forget to put dairy products into your daily diet like low-fat milk, cheese, and yogurt.

Foods rich in vitamin C also helps to burn calories. Foods that are rich in vitamin C are sweet potatoes, collard greens, kale, Brussels sprouts, red cabbage, broccoli and snow peas.

Food is not the only thing that can boost your metabolism. Water and green tea can also help to boost your metabolism.

When you keep your body well hydrated the body can function properly including staying at an optimum energy level for proper metabolism. When you lack proper hydration you body has to work harder, which takes up more energy, leaving less for metabolism. Make sure you drink more than eight-8 oz glasses of water each day. It is especially important to drink water before, during, and after exercise.

Drinking freshly brewed green tea that does not contain caffeine is another way to boost your metabolism. Make sure that the green tea you are drinking reads, “decaffeinated”, on the label. Green tea contains certain chemicals, which increase the rate at which the body burns calories.
