How homeopathic remedies for sciatica work
Tess December 5th, 2007
Homoeopathy is one peculiar therapy that does not have anything in common with other therapies in terms of the basic fundamentals that it uses. The only similarity that one can hope to find is in the way a vaccine works to prevent disease. Just as a vaccine is an immunogen consisting of a suspension of weakened or dead pathogenic cells injected in order to stimulate the production of antibodies to fight a disease, homoeopathic remedies in their dilute form cure the same disease that they cause in their undiluted form.
Homoeopathy has numerous remedies for treating sciatica pain. Numerous, because homoeopathy treats symptoms based on individuality of the patient: there are different remedies for people depending upon their attitudes, mental state, behaviors, sleeping patterns, lifestyles and of course, the symptoms of the disease. If two patients show similar symptoms and one of them is aggressive by nature and the other has a docile temperament, a homoeopath will prescribe different remedies for each of them.
Traditional homoeopathy swears by the principle of ‘single remedy’. For example, for sciatic nerve treatment, if the patient is complaining of, say, a stomach upset also, the practitioner will try to locate a remedy that is indicative of sciatica pain and stomach upset rather than prescribing two different remedies for each of the symptoms. Modern homoeopathy has shed this age old concept: Physicians now prefer to prescribe combinations of remedies and have seen better results.
The preparation and effectiveness of dosage is another significant aspect that needs to be understood. A 30C potency is dilution of one part in 10^-60 and a 200C potency is one part in 10^400. The interesting part is that the higher the dilution the more effective the remedy is believed to be. The mode of preparation of homeopathic remedies is believed to a contributing factor to their effectiveness. After each dilution the mixture is vigorously shaken for a specified period of time, which is believed to help in curative properties of remedies.
It is nearly impossible to list all the homoeopathic remedies for sciatica as each remedy carries a rider, which explains the kind of patients that it is most suitable for. However, some of the frequently indicated remedies for sciatica are as follows:
Arsenicum album - Indicated when pain is aggravated from midnight to 2 AM by cold or cold application and ameliorates by heat and heat applications. Patient refuses to take medicine, fears death and is restless.
Aconite - Aggravation at night and in a hot room.
Ammonium muriaticum - Left sided pain that aggravates on sitting.
Arnica - Aggravates in evenings, sciatica caused by trauma and the patient creates a scene on arrival of the doctor.
Belladonna - Increase in pain by least contact, touch, sound and a gush of wind. Pain is episodic, beginning in the afternoon and ending at midnight.
The list is as long as the multitude varieties of attitudes and typicality of manifestation of symptoms.
Homoeopathy is one of the most important sciatica alternative remedies and should be given its due place among effective therapies. Allopathic medicine refutes the claims made by proponents of homoeopathy and the debate is not liable to reach any conclusion. The ground reality is that homoeopathy has produced excellent results and is extensively used in Europe, South East Asia and many other countries.
