Organic Herbal Remedies - An Overview

We have achieved technological advancement at a great price. We have harmed the environment and soil to such an extent that we now hear news of toxins even in natural products like vegetables. Incidents of toxic elements found in the soil leading to debilitating health hazards have made people more aware than ever before of the conditions under which food is grown. The organic movement has now reached a stage where there is an increasing abhorrence of anything produced or grown with the aid of chemicals. In line with the trend for organic products, organic herbal remedies too are getting the attention that they deserve.

Organic refers to the methods used for producing foods and other farm products without the use of chemicals, pesticides, radiation or any other artificial intervention. Organic farming focuses on farming techniques that allow for natural soil replenishment.

Herbal remedies, as is evident from the name, are natural remediesthat are derived from plants for their medicinal properties of treatment and cure. Studies have now revealed that organic vegetables and plants contain minerals like calcium, magnesium and traces of iron, manganese and copper in much greater quantities than found in non-organic produce.

Going by the same theory, it is obvious that herbal plants grown without chemical fertilizers and pesticides would provide a better therapeutic value of their ingredients. Inorganically produced herbs can potentially reduce the curative properties of the active elements. The icing on the cake is that organic herbs like garlic and ginger root that you may normally be using in your kitchen, taste better.

Herbal remedies are nature’s own gift and can be taken in different ways. They can be had as additives to your normal food (eg. garlic and ginger). The other way is to get fresh herbs and use them as teas after steeping them in boiling water. Some herbs must be decocted, a procedure of boiling them twice over for an hour to extract the required ingredients. Herbal supplements are mostly a combination of herbs that have been prepared according to specific instructions.

The obvious corollary is that organic herbal medicines are costlier. Considering the growing popularity of bottled water, it makes sense that organic herbal medicines and supplements be given priority over those that are commercially produced with excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, simply to get a better crop yield.
